Today we are talking about the third and final feminine deity – Durga. In my previous articles, I shared about Lakshmi and Saraswati.
Goddess of Protection and Justice
Goddess Durga is a Divine Mother of all that is, according to Hindu tradition. Traditionally, she is an incredibly beautiful woman sitting on a tiger or a lion. She holds a shell and a sword, sometimes a bow. This Goddess is protecting and fighting against everything negative or evil. She never fights against the good.
Durga shows her presence when a woman needs to protect her child from danger. Woman needs her energy of justice and protection when a negative energy affects or influences and she needs to say “no”. Even though there is a general idea that a woman should be all sweet and nice, it is not necessarily true.
An ability to protect herself is needed when a woman is confronted with the danger of losing her dignity. This ability is also a spiritual side of the character and self-growth that allows woman to stand her ground, when needed, and not be only a “pretty picture”.
This aspect of femininity is the least understood and learned. The energy of Durga essentially represents the destructive side of femininity. Usually, the best direction for this energy would be the protection of her children and family when danger comes. Durga helps a woman to gather all her power together and bring it out.
In most cases, since this energy of Goddess Durga is least explored and explained, we often don’t know what to do with it. Women are taught to suppress any strong emotion or feeling, and keep it inside. However, it is very unhealthy to keep it accumulated inside without letting it go out.
One way of letting everything go is coming from Nature for women, and it is menstruation. When it comes, this is the time for great cleansing and releasing of all the internal negativity and old unnecessary energetic toxins. If women wouldn’t have menstruation, they would die as young as men normally do. Right now, this is not the case and women generally live longer than men. So essentially, every month we received a blessing with the energy of Goddess Durga and are given a chance to let go of what is no longer needed.
How to attract Durga?
We can take a look on how to attract Durga goddess from different sides. On a physical level this energy manifests itself as cleansing the body from the toxins, that is crucial for our health. So making sure you detox your body whether with herbs or with sweating is important. When we sweat and release it all with liquid, we also release emotional toxins together with the physical ones.
Speaking of liquid, it is very important for a woman to cry. In fact, she has to cry to cleanse herself from the inside. When a woman cries, it does not always mean she is sad or something bad happened. This is her natural form of cleansing and is completely normal. If you cannot make yourself at all, use the onion to generate tears. It will still work. It keeps a woman alive and moving. Becoming frozen or too stable is not beneficial for a woman. However, everything should be done in moderation, and too much crying or cleansing is not good either. It brings depletion. A woman still have to be juicy and full of live, not dried out and rigid.
Another physical aspect is our house. The energy of Goddess Durga here can manifest beautifully in both aspects within a woman – protection and cleaning. It is important to keep the house clean to keep the energy moving around, and to keep it away from stagnation. Stagnation can come not only in the form of the unnecessary belongings, but also on a subtle level of energy. If you don’t feel like staying at home or don’t want to come back, it means the time has come to release your Durga and make it clean again.
It is important to remember that Goddess Durga help us to get rid of everything that is not divine, in a general sense. Everything that comes from the ego is automatically not divine. So a way to understand if you need something in your life or you can let it go is if it brings you the feeling of love and positivity or not. If there is no lively energy of love there, you don’t need it anymore. We are talking about both physical objects in the house and relationships and people in life.
What Durga loves?
This Goddess loves bright fiery colors due to her fiery nature – red and orange. Blue can also work sometimes when you need to get rid of something and end it. If you are in the situation where you need to clear things out and make it come to an end, wearing blue or black for this purpose will help you. Whereas red is the color for fighting, for instance, if you need to go in court.
In terms of the food, it is all about cleansing – detox herbs, fresh green juices, clean water. So every diet that would help you clean your body and maybe even lose weight, as an additional bonus, has the energy of Durga.

Since this goddess is sort of a balance between two other goddesses, Lakshmi and Saraswati, here are the rituals and daily things that will help with creating this balance:
