When I was in my early twenties, I liked shopping at thrift stores. When I discovered them, and which cool and original clothes I could find there (that no one else would wear but me), I became a regular shopper. I really liked going there and spend my time finding something very different looking, something from abroad, something vintage or something very rare and trendy. I enjoyed my time there and my findings very much.
Then, a few years into spirituality, I started learning things slowly. And before I knew it, I realized that my desire to shop at thrift stores became less and less. I still owned stuff I bought, but now I learned that before wearing something I bought in a thrift store, it needs to be cleansed from the energy of the previous owner. As soon as I found it out, it made total sense to me.
A few more year fast forward, and I do not shop at any thrift stores at all. Even for objects. I donated most of the things I bought there and now only shop for new stuff. While for some people it may sound too materialistic and consumerism-oriented, I look at it from a different angle – my own energetic health and healthy vibrations.
Energy Transfers Over To Objects
We are all beings of energy, we always emanate vibrations. And depending on our lifestyle, way of thinking, habits, environment, and things we surround ourselves with, we will have a certain quality of energy and frequencies that will then transfer to everything we own. The longer we own it, and the longer we use it, the more of our energy that object will possess. So, if you wear someone else’s shirt, think of what life that person had. Exactly, usually you have no idea. And you also have no idea what energy comes out from that piece of clothing.
The best way to avoid all that is to simply not buy used things. No matter how pretty or rare they are. It is the most eco-conscious way to treat yourself, in reality. And it is not selfish, it is a healthy way to take care of yourself and energetic health.
How Can You Cleanse, If You Still Buy?
If you still want to buy something used, and there is no way you can live without it, there are a few ways to cleanse objects. You may know some of them, if you have ever cleansed crystals. Or even when you cleansed your own space or room – sage smudging, sunlight, salt. The most effective way, from what I found, is to use running tap water. If what you bought is small enough, you should be able to put it in the sink or a tub, and turn on cold water to run for about an hour.
You can also make an intention as you set it up, by thinking that right now you will get rid this object off of all foreign energy that you do not need. For bigger objects you may use ways that you usually use with cleansing the space, however I would avoid buying used larger objects, because that is the bigger amount of energy you need to cleanse.
It Works Both Ways
There is also the other way around. Before you give your pieces of clothing to someone, you need to make sure your energy is no longer there. The longer you had it, and the stronger you loved it, the more energy it has. Besides washing it, you can use the same method of cleansing it from your own energy – which is the same washing, but on an energetic level. Another way of doing it is by simply visualizing how you “burn” everything with fire, in your head. It burns all the information about you on this object.
You can also sit down and imagine all the things you have ever given out or donated, in an imaginary huge trash bag, And put it under a mental “running water” – like a waterfall, where you can see how everything is washing away from it. And then additionally, add imaginary fire to it. Whichever way works for you in your mind, will do the work. You might even feel a light sense of relief after that, very subtle one.
Otherwise, what will happen is the particles of energy, pieces of your own being on a subtle level, will come in contact with another person’s pieces and this will create this “soup” of energetic connections that in most cases people would want to avoid. It is simply the mentality of hygiene, but on a different level. Most likely, you do not like using someone else’s toothbrush or someone else’s underwear. Because you know – literal pieces of skin, hair, bodily liquids, will be there, and you don’t want them on you. Do you?
This is also a way of protection from unwanted interventions in your life – magical crafts and spells. But I won’t go there now, it is a totally different subject. I think, you got the idea by now.
If you want to be ecologically conscious, there are multiple brands of clothing that produce pieces from eco materials and in an eco way, that even benefit some smaller communities or countries with every sale. There are many other ways to contribute to this cause other than buying old things.
What Else You Can Cleanse?
To give you more ideas, you may further think of other things that can be cleansed – pre-owned car, rental spaces, hotels, hospitals, spa places. Everything that has ever been in long contact with other people. Simply use your intentions prior to using it or entering it.
Can you feel the difference between a fresh brand new clothes you just bought, and pre-owned and used ones?

Very wise article. Thank you!
